The German language
German is a West-Germanic language within the Germanic language family. German is the official language of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and is also spoken in Luxemburg and Belgium. The standard variant is called High German. German is the native language of more than 100 million people worldwide. It is the largest language of the European Union and, after Russian, it is the second largest language in all of Europe. German and Dutch seem quite similar because they come from the same language family. Yet there are important differences.
